Hip Labrum Injury

Hip Labrum Injuries occur when there is damage to the labrum inside the hip joint.  A Hip Labrum is a piece of cartilage inside the hip joint that cushions and create smoother motion for the hip to move.  An injury to the Hip Labrum can happen from many different things but most commonly occurs from heavy impact or shearing of the labrum tissue, from excessive twisting.  This happens often from vigorous activities in sports, laboring jobs, repetitive use activities like biking, running, and weightlifting.

Symptoms of a Hip Labrum Injury are but not limited to Sharp/Stabbing pain, deep aching pain, and pinching in the hip.  Some will experience decreased range of motion, pain with movement, weakness in the hip, pain and/or weakness with walking, pain when walking up or down stairs, pain while running, biking, or swimming, as well as pain when sitting or standing.  If left untreated this can lead to further damage of the labrum leading to tearing.

The best course of action is to seek professional help.  A professional will be able to evaluate and diagnose the injury, which helps them educate you on your options in dealing with a hip labrum injury.  Some labrum injuries can be treated easier than others.  A good treatment plan in less severe cases would be to decrease the pain and improve the mobility of the hip, help build stability and strength and give proper education to the individual on how to manage the issue on their own.

  1. Evaluate & Diagnose the problem to build a specific individualized treatment plan.

  2. Decrease the pain and improve function of the issue.

  3. Stabilize and strengthen the area to prevent further and future injury to the area.

  4. Build a Self-Care program for the individual to manage the problem on their own.
