Quadricep Tendonitis

Quadriceps Tendonitis is a condition in which the distal tendon(tendon above the knee cap) of the Quadriceps muscles becomes inflamed causing pain in the top of the knee and in the muscle of the Quadriceps.  The Quadriceps muscles are a group of four muscles on the front side of the thigh in which mainly controls extension of the knee(straightening of the leg) among other stabilizing and functional factors.  This tendon can become inflamed causing tendonitis for different reasons, but most commonly is seen from overuse/repetitive use.  The demographic of individuals that experience this condition are broad but most commonly seen in active individuals and those who bear weight repetitively through this muscle/joint – runners, cyclists, weightlifters, physical labor jobs, and to some degree desk jobs(from being in a sedentary position to long and then being active can cause stress in this tendon as well).

Symptoms of Quadriceps Tendonitis are but not limited to tightness/tension in the Quadriceps muscles at the knee, tenderness, ache, and sharp/stabbing pain at the top of the knee.  It can cause instability of the knee which can lead to weakness and imbalance on movements.  Sitting to standing can be painful and difficult, climbing stairs and descending stairs may be difficult and painful as well.  This pain is typically constant at different intensities and can be worse at times when one is more sedentary and goes to move.  If left untreated this injury can cause more problems in the knee but also lead to other imbalances and injuries through the leg and hip.

The best course of action for this injury is to seek professional help to evaluate and diagnose the injury properly.  This will help the professional build a proper treatment plan for the injury as well as the individual.  A good treatment plan for this injury should include, Manual Therapy work to help decrease the tightness and stiffness in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments which will help decrease pain as well.  Mobilization of the joints to help with proper function of movement through the pelvis, hips, and knees.  Stability and strength work will help bring support and structure to the injury helping create improved function and prevention of future injury.  And finally, a proper self-care education program for the individual to manage the issues on their own.

  1. Evaluate & Diagnose the problem to build a specific individualized treatment plan.

  2. Decrease the pain and improve function of the issue.

  3. Stabilize and strengthen the area to prevent further and future injury to the area.

  4. Build a Self-Care program for the individual to manage the problem on their own.

At Feroce Spine & Rehabilitation we take a 4-step approach.
